Feeling Free
or Donna's Dancing Quilt

In 2001, I completed a quilt for the Tompkins Country Quilters’ Guild biennial quilt show silent auction. Following a larger collage (IV) on the same theme in the Collage Series, this quilt celebrates finding joy in our sorrowful moments and dancing upon this earth.

My friend, Donna Hall, was collecting the contributed pieces in advance of the show in which it would be auctioned and loved this one so much, as it spoke to her battle with cancer and her lifelong passion for dancing, that she told me she would “bid it up” to the point where she was assured of winning it. Instead, I withdrew it from the auction and “gifted” it to her.

Donna and her husband Dan photographed Donna in poses similar to those in the quilt. And after her death in 2007, I "photoshopped" Donna into the quilt, which had been her desire all along.
